De- and Recode (2021-2023)
De- and Recode by choreographer Phoebe Brack explores the deciphering and rebuilding of flamenco dance through the lens of the brain’s neuroplasticity—an interplay of established and emerging neural patterns. The work reveals an “old” pattern (traditional flamenco) at its core, overlaid with an outer layer that signifies the birth of new connections (contemporary dance), mirroring the brain’s inner and outer structures where novel pathways are formed. It is a living embodiment of transformation and growth.
De- and Recode II focuses on placing the traditional movement vocabulary of flamenco within a contemporary framework. It stands as a symbol of the tension and equilibrium between old and new patterns of thought, and the many facets of personality: the healthy adult, who after trauma forges fresh, positive neural connections, and the wounded child, who clings to entrenched patterns. Both coexisting within a single individual.
De- and Recode III is an inquiry in which choreographer Phoebe Brack draws inspiration from elements of flamenco, reimagined in a contemporary context. Informed by the visual language of science fiction, Brack seeks new possibilities and fresh connections. Can a costume of the future “hack” the body to offer comfort? What might the engineered creation of neural connections look like if made visible upon the exterior of a garment? Speculation about the future, she suggests, can serve as a potent instrument for shaping the present.
About the performance De and Recode
For the choreography series De and Recode, choreographer Phoebe Brack is inspired by principles of neuroplasticity and trauma therapy.
What if you’re sensitive to making connections in the brain that allow you to be creative, but that same sensitivity causes you to make connections in everyday life that aren’t realistic? If your strength is your vulnerability and vice versa?
Learning to make new paths and breaking old patterns that are deeply grooved in the brain by traumatic experiences, for example, is a process of trial and error.
Traditional forms and movements within flamenco dance are placed in a new context in this performance. A symbol for the struggle and balance between old and new thought patterns and the different sides of a personality. The healthy adult who makes positive connections in the brain after a trauma and the hurt child who ‘holds on’ to old patterns, united in one person.
De and Recode I was made for SCHRITTMACHER, generation2. Also co-producer. De and Recode II was shown during the Limburg festival, Camping Cosmos and Pas festival Maastricht. And was supported and made possible in addition to SCHRITTMACHER thanks to the support of VIA ZUID and Sally Maastricht.

In een weiland achter de Heijerhof in Baexem, danst de 23-jarige Conchita Boon uit Amsterdam vol passie op een choreografie van Phoebe Brack (34) die begeleid wordt door het Danslab van VIA ZUID en Sally Dansgezelschap Maastricht. Dabei ist bei seiner Geburt nog völlig unbelastet, geht durch eine unbeschwertekindheit, kann aber auch schnell ein Trauma erleiden, das im Tanz durch ein wehendes transparantes gelbes Tuch dargestellt. Leben acuh zerstören kann. Am Ende gab der Flamenco der Tänzerin in der eindrucksvollen Präsentation jedoch die mit irhem Trauma terechtzukommen”.

Phoebe Brack, die in Sevilla Flamenco-Tanz studiert hat, zeigte mit ihrer Partnerin einen harmonischen Tanz, den die Zuschauer mit reichlich Beifall bedachten. Sichtlich erfreut über den Zuspruch war dementsprechend Sabrina Martin von der Stadt Wassenberg, die vor Ort die Organisation leitete”.

Twee keer zag ik talent, passie, gevoel voor drama, prachtige timing en vooral je ziel en zaligheid bloot leggen in cultuuruitingen. Vooral dat laatste grijpt toch ieder mens met een beetje gevoel voor de grote en kleine vragen in het leven bij de keel.
